What are Multimedia products?
I hear you asking, " what are multimedia products?"
The answer is pretty simple, A product where software gives you the opportunity to connect and interact from user to various media technologies. this is usually through audio and or visual use of pictures, music, video and written work. The six main multimedia products are pictures, sound, animations, video and virtual reality.
I am looking into a few examples of multimedia products on a few different websites and explore their use of multimedia to keep you engaged within their website. I will explore what combination of products they use, outline the purpose of their use of the multimedia and finally the affects on the users emotions and behaviour.
The first website i will look at is www.linktr.ee, the link above will take you to their template page.
This website uses pictures, videos and sound to promote the use of its services. Using attractive eye catching colour themes to engage and persuade you to use their service of bio link trees.
The purpose of their use of the various multimedia is to get you to use them above other sites that offer the same service. They want you to use their Bio link trees. A bio link tree gives you one landing page where you can have all clickable links to all your social media channels, shops, websites, blogs or vlogs etc..... anything to do with your self or your company can be attached to this bio link tree.
It allows you to show to the user, anything and everything you have online. From your live show dates, to your latest music demo tracks to all you social channels.
It is common to see a linktree clickable on instagram or twitter profile bios, it saves space and time and means you don't have to keep repeating your handles, links etc to every user or consumer. All your info and links in one space, as seen below.
The affects this has on the user are primarily only positive, it allows them to de clutter and simplify all of their info and or content into one manageable space and also condenses it all for the user of their content.
The next website or platform that I'm looking at is youtube, potentially the most popular multimedia platform in the world. The use of multimedia products, combinations and uses of the products are vast.
Youtube does not create its own content and is only a platform for content created by others, they can be independent or commercial and this can go from one person and 0 subs (subscribers) up to multinational companies or personalities with millions of subs.
Video and audio are the main vehicles of multimedia products used to entertain, educate or inform. The use of youtube is pretty much unlimited and only held back by a lack of creativity or imagination. There are also comment and reply sections, short videos and subscription option that can be monetised.
The purpose from YouTube point of view is to keep users watching for as long as possible and get them to consume as many adverts as possible as this is their main income stream. there are some sub purposes that get into the area of influencing the masses minds using AI algorithms to push and promote what they or their regulators want to be seen or taken on and even censor and or remove what they don't want to be seen.
The affects from youtube can be hugely positive, with for example the amount of tutorial and educational videos on virtually any subject you can think of. there can also be a very negative side coming for the algorithm and censoring side. keeping users locked into an echo chamber rabbit hole, where they only amplify their new beliefs through previous content viewed. The same vehicle can be used positively, to show new and unseen videos that may be useful to you and in subject areas you've shown an interest in.
A quick search for "indesign" will show many tutorials, hints and tips for the use of that program.
A quick search for "news uk" returns what is shown below. Channels can even livestream like the top result shows
The overall affect on users is still up for debate but youtube has had a massive cultural effect on the modern world. It has allowed us to access place and people in a way that before was almost impossible. I suppose the effect it has depends on how the consumer uses the platform but overall the effects of education, informing and expanding our scope of the world, cultures and practices can be judged as both impressive and positive.
BBC sounds is part of the overall BBC online website, it's a sub section. It uses various multimedia products in the form of podcasts, radio shows and DJ sets/music.
The use of the multimedia is to promote and show you the content you are either subscribed to and to promote new music or podcasts that you might be interested in, there is no independent content here, only BBC programs and content are available on this platform.
The site is used for entertainment through the radio shows, music or podcasts in the form of dj sets, or music radio shows or comedy podcast. Its also heavily filled with educational podcast or shows for any age, from the toddler to adult, the information and subject is very broad and wide open. so again the effect on the audience or user is relative and based on what you consume and take from what you consume.
